Sunday 8/15/10 Last day in Sea Isle

Sunday 8/15/10

Up early on a Sunday morning at the seashore, what does one do?
Bay
View of the bay…..i was sitting here in the morning reading
Cimg1582
decided to take a walk to the beach –
just to make sure the ocean was still there.
A lot of times we go “down the shore” &
never even make it to the beach!
Cimg1584
stray/abandoned pong ball i found way out front.
HOW did it get THERE?
Cimg1585
i love taking pictures of unique license plates.
I’m guessing some lucky kids grandmom bought them a car?
Cimg1587
the beach early in the morning – not too crowded
Cimg1588
they clean the beaches everyday –
one of the reasons we pay beach tag fees!
Cimg1589
i like how the birds were playing in the surf
Cimg1590
dead horse shoe crab.
Do they have these at your beaches?
Cimg1592

LIFE HERE IS GOOD!

~ you can buy benches & add what you want it to say.
A lot of people use them as memorials.
i liked this one!
Cimg1593
THERE! it’s fixed…..
I hope no one really drives this car like that…..
Cimg1594
back to Schneider’s house on the bay – they live on 46th Place
Cimg1595
Schneider’s on the Bay – as i named them on foursquare!
Cimg1598
Michael’s turn to read while

Saturday 8/14/10 Biking from Sea Isle City to Atlantic City & back!

Saturday 8/14/10
Instead of playing volleyball today we are BIKING!
Biking at the shore is FUN for me b/c it’s FLAT!
I am NOT a lover of the hills…..
The plan is to ride from Bill & Robin’s house in Sea Isle City (SIC)
to Atlantic City. ( 40 miles round trip)

Cimg1486
Ready to embark on BIKE ADVENTURE….
pair of shoes #2…….
Cimg1490
We did not see any Turtles crossing the road.
False advertising?
Cimg1520
Our first city we biked to was STRATHEMERE –
4 miles from SIC

Cimg1492
not ready for picture picture. nice calves!
Cimg1493
We arrived in Ocean City
(8 miles from Strathmere, 12 from SIC)

—————————————————————————————-
some of you already know that my family used to own a beach house
in Ocean City & lived there for about 30 years. My dad sold the house
about 7 years ago & the first thing the developer did was tear it down.
I wanted to do a drive by of our old house that wasn’t’ there anymore.
In it’s place is a fancy new duplex.
Cimg1495
That’s where our old house used to be. I’m sure the
new duplexes are super nice but it’s still sad
to see the old house GONE. Lots of memories there!
As I was taking the picture the new owners
struck up a conversation with us & of course
I told them I used to live in the house that
was there before…..
Cimg1496
John & Susan the new owners — were SUPER NICE.
John ran inside the house to get a picture of our old house
they had hanging on their wall .
Cimg1497
there she is. 4 bedroom brick home.
yellow awnings…. loved it there!
We probably spent about 15 minutes chatting with
John & Susan…. then it was time to pedal on!
Cimg1499
view from the Longport – ocean city bridge.
That’s a dog beach where dogs can run free.
You’re looking at Longport, Margate, Ventor & AC
Cimg1518
We arrived safely in LONGPORT, NJ.
OC to Longport is 4 miles, SIC to Longport 16 miles
Cimg1517
Margate is right next to Longport – just one mile!
(SIC to Margate = 17 miles)
Cimg1500
LUCY the Elephant is a big attraction in Margate.
I love how they have the Elephant Butt saying WELCOME!
Cimg1510
Me & LUCY!
Cimg1508
bottled elephant water
Cimg1503
the beach in Margate was BUSY!
Cimg1512
now we are in VENTNOR!
that’s just 2 miles over from Margate.
(19 miles from SIC)
Cimg1515
Last stop ATLANTIC CITY!!!
just 2 miles from Ventor & 20 miles from SIC.
Time to turn around & head back.
Cimg1519
We saw this roadside memorial –
it was quite elaborate
Cimg1522
BACK in Sea Isle City!!!  40 miles – woo hoo 🙂

time to relax……….

always positive,

Helcha 🙂

my mortgage re-finance papers are in the mail (Fedex)…

We are getting an AWESOME deal.

We got a WAY lower rate, with ZERO points,

plus $$$ back to finish the basement ….

AND “our guy” introduced us to an insurance guy (his brother!)

who is ALSO saving us $$$. The BEST part is:

our payment is even lower than before!!

What’s NOT to like?

Jeffsketch
this is JEFF – our mortgage guy….
call him (

610 964 1200)

Tell him HELEN sent you -he will save you $$$$

neighbor DAN told me about him

(thanks for the intro Dan!)

Chris
Chris our IT guy – trying to figure out

WHAT IS GOING ON ? — (Friday the 13th?)

all the computers in our office were down –

this could be devastating for a busy trading room!

The server finally resolved their issues

& Chris installed a new router

so eventually we were ok.

Ray
meanwhile – everyone was on their iPhones!
here’s co-worker Ray.
Cimg2579
LOOK!! We have baby bluebirds. I missed the “birth”….
i think they are a few days old….
Cimg2578
farm fresh Ivyland Tomatoes!! Hand picked by Michael.
Cimg2576
I LOVE a tomato sandwich.

I forget how much I like them until I eat them……

Shoes
How many pairs of shoes do I need to go
away for the weekend??  FOUR, apparently…
plus the pair I am wearing down the shore.
I guess that makes FIVE…..?

Double Bind by Chris Bohjalian (review)

    Double Bind {Review}

    Double_bind

Double Bind. Where do I begin? I’m giving it 3 stars b/c it IS well written & the way Chris B.
describes things is pretty cool – I couldn’t even begin to think like he does to write / describe like that.
On the other hand – the book was kind of crazy. With the references to the Great Gatsby
I am wondering if I would have had a better understanding of the book had I re-read Gatsby
first before diving into Double Bind? Also – the ending really throws you for a loop.
I almost feel like I need to re-read Double Bind again to better understand the book?
I’ve hear it likened to the movie Sixth Sense – whereas – when you find out the ending
it helps you understand the WHOLE movie so if you watch it again you say AHA.
I’m not saying to NOT read Double Bind however if you chose to read it be forewarned
you are really going to want to re-read it to understand it.

8/12/10 FLUGTAG ~ orange cone ~ good deed

    8/12/10
“Lean” Picture of the Day today – for a change!!!
We were suppose to bike by the RAIN said NO
    & I said YAY b/c I’m tired from endlessly going out …..

    Cimg0273
I kept seeing signs for FLUGTAG & after
asking Facebook friends WHAT IS IT? I learned:

Red Bull Flugtag challenges teams of everyday people to build homemade,
human-powered flying machines and pilot them off a 30-foot high deck
in hopes of achieving flight! Flugtag may mean “flying day” in German,
but all these crafts ultimately splash into the waters below.
They are judged not only on their flight’s distance,
but creativity and showmanship as well.

    WHO is IN???
    Cimg0274
i took Michael to the shop to pick up his company car.
LOOK what the mechanic did? Put the cone in front —
as per company policy!!!! pretty good service….
    Cimg0275
    Chester & Michael’s butts!
    Necklace
Do you remember THIS? The starfish necklace
the Beach Tag Lady gave me??

Wednesday 8/11/10 St James Chuch, Union Jack’s

    Wednesday 8/11/10

    Cimg1461
We just found out the day before that our friend
Dave Harp’s brother Harry had died suddenly.
We went to the church to pay respects and see our friend.
It’s always nice to be surrounded by friends at times like this.
    Cimg1462
Statue at St James church in Elkin’s Park.
around 25 ish minutes from Ivyland, PA.
    Cimg1463
We had made plans to go to Union Jack’s, a pub in Glenside,
tonight because they were having “special beer” on tap.
They produce Pliny the Elder & Blind Pig.
The place was PACKED — on a school night too!!!

    Cimg1465
When we came out we saw THIS
    Cimg1466
    What was going on??
    Cimg1469
just a car getting towed – nothing serious —
but it was blocking both our cars so we had to wait….

“Man often becomes what he believes himself to be. If I keep on saying to myself that I cannot do a certain thing, it is possible that I may end by really becoming incapable of doing it. On the contrary, if I shall have the belief that I can do it. I shall surely acquire the capacity to do it, even if I may not have it at the beginning.”
