ADVENTURE to Berkshire Hathaway 2010 Shareholder Meeting

ADVENTURE to Berkshire Hathaway 2010 Shareholder??Meeting

This year, along with neighbors Roman & Denise,
I ventured to the Berkshire Hathaway shareholder meeting in Omaha, Nebraska.

A
????
?? We wanted to experience WOODSTOCK FOR INVESTORS first hand.
This year approximately 40,000 shareholders made the trip.

Personally, I was most interested in hearing Warren Buffet and Charlie Munger,
??(two of the most successful businessmen in the world),
??answer random questions for six hours
and I secretly hoped that some of their wisdom would somehow magically transfer to ME!

Warren-and-charlie-225x300

??

Upon our arrival my friend Shannon’s Aunt Randi
(who I only knew through Facebook) retrieved us from the airport.

B

??

????
We were given?? a mini-tour of downtown Omaha,
particularly a section called the Old Market.
There were fun shops & bars – a “happening” part of town that reminded us a little
of New Hope, Pa {http://www.newhopepennsylvania.com/} but on a smaller scale.
Next we picked up our rental car
did an early check in at the Hotel.
{hint: do NOT stay here: http://www.yelp.com/biz/la-quinta-inn-omaha-southwest-omaha}.

????

????
??
Of course by this time we were starving & “thirsty”
so Randi escorted us to her favorite place for Margaritas.
We drank some ate some & drank some.
Fernando’s was fun, the margaritas were great as was the company.
C
??
??
Next on the agenda was a drive by of Warren’s house. As we were expecting
??- it was a nice enough house and NOT a McMansion..
D

??

??
After “stalking” Warren’s house (not really…) we checked out Boys Town (http://girlsandboystown.org/)
??which now includes girls. The original Boys Town was founded as a boys’ orphanage?? in 1921.
E
??
I believe it is pretty
much mandatory to eat at Warren’s favorite restaurants

??- at least for one’s first visit. Tonight we ate at Piccolo’s.
F
??
??It was NOT a fancy schmancy restaurant -it was really no frills.
G
??
For dinner, since we were in the beef mecca of America, we all partook of the COW
(T-bone, Strip steak & prime rib) & were happy with our choices.
H
??
Last event for the evening was a “Concert & Conversation” with Peter Buffett,
Warren Buffet’s son
I
The event was held at the Witherspoon Concert Call
located in Joslyn Art Museum which is in downtown Omaha.
After the concert we HAD to get some sleep
– we were up since 3:30 a.m. & had a BUSY next day ahead of us.

———————————————————————————————
????
Saturday – May 1st 2010 ~~~
THE MAIN EVENT?? ~~~???? (and Roman’s birthday!)

The day of the meeting, we woke up early, drove down to the Qwest Center
and got in line about 6 a.m.
There were already thousands of shareholders waiting in front of the main doors.
We finally found the end of one of the lines then began the hour wait for the doors to open.
We already decided for next year we need to BE THERE by 5 a.m……..
J
??
??At exactly 7:00 a.m., the doors to the Qwest Center were opened
& there was a RUSH (but not a mad rush, more orderly) to get inside.
Unfortunately for us people were getting out of taxis
& walking right in after we just waited an hour for a “good spot”.
K
????
????
Lesson learned: get there EARLY!
We eventually got seats (not great), saved them,
then waited in the next (orderly) line for complimentary coffee and cinnamon rolls.
About 8:30 the “standard” movie begins.
This year it starts with a cartoon that’s designed to teach children good spending habits.
??There’s a video about Burlington Northern
(the railroad Buffet bought for $27 billion, his largest deal ever).
??Then there is a funny “Desperate Housewives” clip where the women refer to
Warren & Charlie Munger.
We see a Geico ad where Warren is dressed as a rock star.
Apparently ever year the movie includes a clip of Warren testifying before congress
and includes his famous quote
??”Lose money for the firm, and I will be understanding.
??Lose a shred of reputation for the firm, and I will be ruthless.???

??This alone makes me admire Warren Buffett.
Upon the ending of the movie Warren & Charlie are set to answer (for about 6 hours)
??unscripted questions from shareholders & journalists
who had questions submitted to them prior to the meeting.
L
Questions regarding an assortment of topics were fielded by Warren & Charlie.
Everyone loved when Warren asked if Charlie wanted to comment
he would respond in a dry tone.
“I have nothing to add” but sometimes Charlie DID provide relevant commentary.
Some subjects covered were: Goldman Sachs “debacle”
(Charlie said “while Goldman did nothing illegal,
the firm was engaged in “socially undesirable” activities),
Greece, and Harley Davidson – investing in debt vs. equity.
I particularly loved when Warren said he had an unused carry-forward
on his latest income tax return
from charitable donations of $7 billion.

We took a short BREAK FOR LUNCH then back to more Q & A

which was just as great as the first session.
Following the Q & A we returned to the downstairs Exhibitor Hall.
Many of the companies that make up the Berkshire stock are represented.
Here are a couple pictures:
??

MN

??
?? Upon leaving the Qwest center we headed to the Old Market,
??had some drinks & relaxed after our busy day. We had to get ready for our next adventure???..the Nebraska Furniture Mart BBQ
O

??
??Nebraska Furniture Mart (NFM) hosted an enormous BBQ for shareholders.??
??
They served pulled pork sandwiches, chips and a cookie for only $5.
Oh, and Coke too, of course.
??

PQ

??
??
??We shopped while using a shareholder discount (30%).
??Roman wanted to buy a massage chair but Denise & I
just ended up buying candles (for our smokey rooms!).
R

??
SUNDAY 5/2/10 Borsheims Event
????
We woke up bright &am
p; bushy tailed Sunday morning
& explored the buffalo statues downtown
??and the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge
that lead from Nebraska to Iowa.
??
Our next event after exporing OMAHA was the brunch at Borsheims
??? the famous jewelry store which is part of Berkshire???s portfolio.
??The mall in which it is located is shut down and guarded by security
so that only shareholders can attend.
There was a buffet, open bar, and live musical entertainment.
All of the prices in the store have been lowered at least 30% as a shareholder discount.
??
We also had the opportunity to watch Warren (& Roman)
play Ariel Hsing ??? a 14 year old t able tennis champion.
??
??

STUWXYZZz

Another interesting activity to see was U.S.?? Chess Champion Patrick Wolff ??
playing against several opponents at once, blindfolded.
Zzz
????
??Our last HURRAH in Omaha was having dinner at Gorat???s
??? another of Warren???s favorite restaurants.
They are usually closed Sunday???s but they opened
for the Shareholders. Special menu & everything!
1

??
Helen, Roman, Denise & Randi @ Gorat’s
2

??
??
We did get a glimpse of Charlie Munger, Warren Buffet & Bill Gates ???
??but as you could imagine ??? security was tight so getting photos was difficult.
3

??
And here is one of my favorite photos
on the way home to our hotel:

AFRICA ~ Climbing Kilimanjaro (june 2005)…

Kilimanjaro
                   Kilimanjaro 19,300 feet

Hi everyone,

thought you all might like to know we got back safely to the States yesterday. If anyone has every visited a third world country (or a FAR AWAY country for that matter) —  i am sure you know  the relief felt upon the landing of the plane  (despite it being a VERY bumpy landing for us). We spent close to 20 hours flying – do you know how loooong that is??  it SEEMS way longer than 20 hours i can tell you that – it feels like eternity!
i am happy to report the whole trip was a success and only relatively minor injuries to a few in our group ( – due to improper preparation).

All members of our group successfully summitted Mt Kilimanjaro –  which is quite amazing considering about 20,000 people a year try reaching the top & only 1/2 complete the climb to the highest peak – which is 19,300 feet.  Can you say LACK OF AIR?  when you finally descend & can breathe again you are in total awe of what you just accomplished.  The trek up the mountain to base camp (15,000 feet) was a “chore” in itself requiring physical & mental strength.  Many, many times you just WONDER HOW you did what you just did. My main mental frame was one of “just do it”.   Don’t even think about it – JUST DO IT.  Don’t ask questions, don’t wonder how you are getting to the top –  JUST DO IT – one step at a time!  Fortunately i trained VERY hard & was extremely disciplined in preparing for the trip that i felt relatively “GOOD” the whole time – yet still in shock at each day’s accomplishment…..
The final summit day was the most grueling of days.  You start hiking at midnight – so needless to say it is very dark (pitch black) and pretty cold to add to the fun.  (you do use headlamps so you can see something) The guides start you climbing at nite so you can summit at sunrise PLUS i also think they don’t want you actually “seeing” what you are climbing.  The altitude at base camp was 15,000 feet the peak is 19300.  You literally take “baby steps” from base camp to summit – this takes about 8 hours.  You cannot go any faster – you just physically can’t move any faster – you can barely breathe!   ( i know each of you are all wondering ‘HOW do i sign up for this adventure?’) You are climbing ( & ascending) on an assortment of terrain – from dirt & gravel to frozen scree ( loose rocks & sand) and they throw a little bouldering in just to make it more entertaining – oh yes and there is lotsa snow so you get to trek thru that too.  In addition to traversing the terrain you are ascending so there is less oxygen.  You practically can’t breathe – that part is really fun!  I said they take you at nite bc i think they don’t want you actually “seeing” what you are climbing — what i mean by that — is if you could REALLY REALLY see what you were doing most people would bail before taking that second Baby Step…..
One wrong step – one false move & you were tumbling down the side of the mountain – and believe me – you would NOT be alive to tell the story because you would be DEAD.  Yes – the final summit attempt was extremely TREACHEROUS.  did i mention the final ascent was TREACHEROUS ???? potentially deadly……………..
After reaching the top & getting pictures taken – you start your descent.  This part was actually kind of fun – for me – for real – all joking aside.  A few of the girls in my group were taken to the summit & taken down by our guides — one even got a “piggy back” ride from one of the guides.  The surface on the descent was pretty much just scree – which as i said before is loose gravel & sand.  Well- if you don’t know how to navigate scree you can be miserable. Being a skier i was able to SKI the scree – the guides were in disbelief how i managed to get down with relative ease.  My guide and i were laughing & throwing snowballs  — skiing the scree – having a grand ol’ time – i am sure part of this was delirium…..  (Some of the others in my group were close to tears & ready to puke…getting piggyback rides down the mountain……)  All those balance sports i play really paid off —   I was able to descend in about 2 hours.  the rest of the group took about 3 hours.  An extra hour back at base camp was a wonderful thing because we still had to do another descent to the next camp.  After the last group got in – we rested about an hour.  Then it took about 4 hours to get the next camp.  That was one looooooong day.   The final day was spent descending to the base of the mountain thru a rain forest.  We got to see monkeys so that was pretty cool.  We each got official certificates saying we climbed the mountain. And of course bought the t-shirts that say “i climbed Kili” ………..
We spent a day recuperating from the climb then went on a 2 day safari.  The safari was pretty cool because you got to see animals in the WILD instead of in JAIL (behind bars at the zoo).
We saw the “standard” animals that one would expect – elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, pools of hippos, a black rhino, baboons, velvet monkeys & others i know i am forgetting.  A few of the “cooler” sightings – one where a lioness was having “breakfast” – and it wasn’t a bacon, egg, cheese sandwich.  I couldn’t quite identify the LEG sticking up but i am sure it was quite tasty (for her….).  She finished with her breakfast & the hyenas & jackals moved in for leftovers.  That was pretty cool to see too.  Another favorite animal sighting was a cheetah trying to catch an antelope.  I guess the Antelope had his KEDS on that day because he ran faster than the cheetah and escaped being lunch that day.  The cheetah just got too tired & gave up on the chase –  the “chase” was very exciting to see.  We also saw a pride of lions just laying around – loved seeing that too.

Hope you all enjoyed “the adventures of Helen in Africa” —  if anyone has interest in climbing Kili i kept a journal while i was there & part of the journal is “Tips for next time” – so next time i do it i will be REALLY prepared…….
Where i was in Tanzania (east africa) is extremely poor – these people really have nothing – and sad to say – my dogs live better than most of the people there live.  We are all so fortunate to have what we have & it is way easier to REALLY APPRECIATE what we have since being in Africa……  I really hope i never complain about anything ever again in my life – though i really try not to as it is ….. i am really going to be conscientious now more than ever.
Every day above ground IS a GREAT day (when u live in the USA).
so happy to be back  🙂

Monday 5/9/10 stir fry, support, book, POOL TABLE!!!, bird

Monday 5/9/10

Cimg9078
tonight I made this tasty stir fry with veggies & brown rice
Cimg9080

I used these spices to liven it up – it was really very tasty

& no leftovers – that’s always a good sign!

The “rooster sauce” as I call it is Tuong ot Sriracha -a hot chili sauce.

Lee Kum King soy sauce is the BEST of  all soy sauces –

we get both at Wegman’s (an awesome grocery store near us

Click here: History | Wegmans ).

And pretty much the ONLY place I buy my spices these days is

PENZEY’s  – there is one close to me; I used to do mail order

before I could actually shop there. www.penzeys.com

My boss’s dad died ~ so to show support
Michael & I attended the viewing tonight –
The funeral home was really very nice
with a river view too! – fortunately it wasn’t too sad.
Cimg9085
on our way home we got stuck in construction traffic.

2010 Saturday May 8th

I was scheduled to play Beach Volleyball today but

due to rain & wind forecast at the beach

 the tournament was cancelled

They’re not FUN elements to play volleyball in.

Instead …. I joined Michael to visit his mom for a Mother’s Day

brunch at her apartment building.

Cimg9067
been wanting to visit the Stoogeum for awhile…
basically it is a Museum dedicated to the 3 Stooges.

It’s very close to our house – actually right near Chester’s Dog School.

Rick’s is a byob – this is what I brought….. Decoy, 2003 , Red Wine Blend –

(which I bought after biking in 2006 – you KNOW every bottle in my cellar tells a story!)

The only “problem” with wine like this is – it tasted SO GOOD I want to drink

the whole bottle……

Img_0961
I happen to like Soft Shell Crabs –
so when I see them on the menu
i will generally order them….
Img_0964
for dinner I ALWAYS get their portabella parmesan –
it’s my favorite!

 This is FUNNY.
I have a friend and fellow Smile Therapier named Helen Diehl.
Helen seems to be LIVING LIFE. This lady knows HOW TO HAVE FUN. She has this very creative and talented blog called Picture of the Day (POTD) where she basically goes around, and takes interesting, fun, educational,  and humorous shots during her daily routine. Helen enjoys her skiing, bike riding, socializing with friends (and an occasional wine or brew), and traveling around. I believe she is still working, yet manages to fit quite a bit into a day. Her picture of the day can be seen here…

 http://helentdiehl.posterous.com/

Now, the funny part is that after checking out her blog a few times a week, I noticed something strangely funny??? The way she signs her credit card transactions.

I???ve seen the likes of a Bill Gates, Mickey Mouse, and  Warren Buffet. I ve even seen a signature that says   hello??? Mr waiter. Basically anything she feels like is appropriate for where she is, at the time. Nothing criminal or slanderous about it. The odd thing is, no one ever seems to check the signature, or care what is signed. It???s now become a thing of comedy. Just some good, clean, harmless fun.

Here is the site where she first got the idea…
