Saturday 10/29/11 Wine University, flat tire, snowstorm, Taormina’s

Saturday 10/29/11

A
Today I attended Wine University.
It was an all day long class.
A lot of information.
Aa
our wine aroma wheels & glasses set up for tasting.
We learned a plethora of information.
I’m looking forward to putting it all to use!
I might even teach YOU
– if you want to learn more about wine…..
Aaa
the girl next to me was wearing these cute
Halloween socks. I think I need a pair.

===================================================

While I was tucked away warm & safe at Wine School —
there was a treacherous snow storm brewing outside.
We even lost power at school for a couple hours –
but the wine tasting/education continued…..

Cimg3362
meanwhile, in Ivyland,
neighbor Esther shoveled our whole block.
I said to sister Pat – I should have been home –
maybe I could have made some money shoveling!
Cimg3363

Cimg3364
sister Pat said at one point the branches were almost
on the ground from the heavy weight of the snow

I couldn’t let everyone have FUN in the SNOW.
I got a flat tire on the way home from
school & was stranded on I-95.
Fortunately – AAA was on their way to rescue me!

Thank you Mr. Flat Tire Changer!

=======================================================

I was gone ALL DAY long & my flat tire adventure added on to that time.
When I finally got home, I was content just staying there
but Michael wanted to go over to Taormina’s for dinner.
J
i just got something simple – an Italian stromboli
(formerly called a pizza wrap)
K
Michael got what he said was the
“BEST dish in the World” -for tonight anyway.
He likes to order “off their menu” and get their Cajun Calamari
with sauteed broccoli rabe on the side.
(check out the SALT – how cool is it I captured that!)

Putting my Wine University education right to work!

Hansom 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Deep purple ruby in color.
  • Fairly strong bouquet with undertones of blackberry & licorice.
  • Dry, quite tannic with high alcohol (13%)
  • Full bodied yet not real okay with long finish
  • Would pair well with a stromboli, nice steak, heartier cheeses, chocolate or fine just by itself!

Acknowledge the lesson is every situation.

Everything is a life lesson.
Everyone you meet, everything you encounter, etc.
They’re all part of the learning experience we call ‘life.’
Never forget to acknowledge the lesson,
especially when things don’t go your way.
If you don’t get a job that you wanted or a relationship doesn’t work,
it only means something better is out there waiting.
And the lesson you just learned is the first step towards it.

Ingredients for making Catalina French Dressing.

I came home from work – starving!
I wanted a salad & was in the mood for FRENCH Dressing.
I put it on the grocery list but that was not helpful for my current situation.

So I decided to MAKE my OWN! I love doing this when I can.
Eat less processed food.
P1010903
THE RECIPE I used as a guideline.
I rarely “listen” to recipes & always do my own thing.

Would you like me to make YOU some??

Book I just finished reading…….
My friend Rich wrote this book & I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND reading it.
It is easy reading & you will definitely identify with much of what is written.
You will also want to order one for your boss & their boss as well.
I can send them out anonymously if you want – let me know……..

FREE to a good home.
It’s nicely embroidered & good quality. and FREE!
if you want it – you know what to do!
Q

I posted this too late for you to actually buy one —
but the SPOOKY MONKEYS are a cool creation.
I usually get one every year.

All the spooky monkeys are sold out but Kim can always
make you a “regular” one – they are awesome gifts!

Decoy Napa Valley Red Wine 2007

Blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc & Petit Verdot.

Bouquet displays hints of raspberry/blackberry.

The tannins are smooth & not super dry.

Medium to Fuller-bodied with a nice start but a little lacking on the finish.

Pairs great with heavier cheeses such as ParmigianoReggiano

also would go nicely with a steak.

Goes pretty good with chocolate too – that’s what I had last night…..

WHAT TO SERVE WITH THE BIRD

It’s that time of the year that everyone asks me, being the WINE EXPERT I am…..
WHAT WINE should I serve with the bird (Turkey) for Thanksgiving…..???
I put together this handy guide which I hope you will find useful.

——————————————————————————————–

WHAT TO SERVE WITH THE BIRD!!!!!!!!!!!!

Turkey-wine-index-11-06-flat

The big question – which wine or wines go with Thanksgiving Dinner?
Another question to ask is:  Do I want ONE WINE for the whole dinner
or several that pair with each course – appetizers, turkey & sides, dessert?

If you want ONE WINE to take you through the gamut a good choice could
be a sparkler.  Champagne/ Sparkling Wines are not only for special occasions
and celebrations.  Gloria Ferrer Vineyards makes a nice sparkling wine, it is
reasonably priced & accessible at most liquor stores.

Images

If you opt not to serve the Sparkler here are some other ideas:

White Wine suggestions:

RIESLING: a nice white wine that can be dry or fairly sweet,
excellent with any dishes that are spicy, salty or sweet.
{Pronunciation: Rees-ling}

Here are a few suggestions in the $10 range:

  • Yalumba Y Series Riesling (Austalia)
  •  Dr. Loosen Riesling (Germany)
  • Firestone Vineyard’s Select Riesling

Sauvignon Blanc:   This is a crisp white wine, easy drinking, light to medium bodied.
{Pronunciation: saw vee nyon blahnk}

a few suggestions:

  • Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc  (New Zealand)
  •  Beaulieu’s Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc (California)

The LAST WHITE WINE I’d like to suggest is my favorite…..
VIOGNIER!  (vee oh nyay)

Viognier is a nice white varietal.    try it, you’ll like it.
If not – give it to me – I will finish it for you.

  • Elk Cove Viognier Willamette Valley (Oregon)
  • Hogue Viognier Columbia Valley (Washington)
  • Pride Viognier Sonoma County (California)

Viognier

RED WINE suggestions…………….

Certainly one cannot talk about Thanksgiving wine pairing without
mentioning Beaujolais Nouveau!

Beaujolais Nouveau A light, fruity red wine, from the Gamay grape,
it goes quite well with turkey and all of the fixings.
*This wine is ONLY released from France on the third Thursday of November.

{Pronunciation: boh jhoe lay noo-VOH}

Les Vins Georges Duboeuf & Louis Jadot are probably the largest purveyors of Beaujolais.0images

If you chose not to serve Beaujolais then Pinot Noir is a good choice!

Pinot Noir: This red wine is a traditional favorite for Thanksgiving.

It is smooth and silky, with subtle aromas.
{Pronunciation: pee noh nwahr}

Vineyards that produce nice Pinot’s: (and you should be able to find…)

  • Argyle Pinot Noir Willamette Valley (Oregon)
  • Elk Cove Noir Willamette Valley (Oregon)
  • Beaulieu Vineyard Pinot Noir Napa Valley Carneors (California)
  • Estancia Pinot Noir Monterey Pinnacle (California)

Zinfandel:   A fuller bodied red wine that ups the intensity from a Pinot Noir.
~ a great wine pick for those looking for a heartier red wine.

Zins to consider….. that may be easy to find:

  • Cline Zinfandel Sonoma Valley
  • Frog’s Leap Zinfandel Napa Valley
  • Steele Zinfandel Mendocino County

AND of course — if you happen to open a bottle of wine & don’t care for it
this is what you do with it…………Make Sangria!
